Joyce Slater was born and raised in Northeast, Kansas City, MO, not far from the Kansas City Museum. She attended Holy Cross Grade School and Cardinal Glennon High School. She attended Central Missouri State University received her BSE in art from Emporia State University. She lives in Kansas City with her husband, and her two cats. Joyce has two children and six grandchildren. Joyce began her professional career as a high school art teacher. She also taught art privately. She has been an artist and actress since as long as she could remember. She started studying art at the Nelson Atkins Art Gallery when she was 5 years old. In first grade she was winning ribbons for her art work. At age 7 she began her stage work playing an Angel in the Christmas pageant at Holy Cross. Joyce has been involved in the arts all of her life in one way or another. In 1996, Joyce became a full time free lance storyteller Storytelling 1989- Began storytelling 1991-coordinated first Tellabration for River and Prairie Storyweavers 1992-1998, 2006-2008 Events Coordinator for River and Prairie Storyweavers 1998-National Storytelling Conference committee member in Kansas City 1998-2002- Director, River and Prairie Storyweavers 2000-PRESENT- Artistic Director for The Kansas City Storytelling Celebration, Maple Woods Community College 2001- National Service Award, River and Prairie Storyweavers 2003-PRESENT -National Storytelling Network Board Member (currently held position) (Grants committee, Festival advisory committee, Finance committee) Storyteller and Workshop Leader Joyce tells stories to a wide variety of audiences, preschool through adult with stories appropriate for each group. She teaches storytelling to adults and children. Some of her workshops include Building Characters, Picture the Story, Remember When, Voice Production, Story Theatre, Stage Presence, Interviewing Techniques for Students, Storybuddies, Storytelling in the Classroom and Beginning Storytelling for Adults and for Children. Stories That Fold and Unfold In 2003, Joyce and her oldest grandson, Alexander Slater, began performing together. They created a program of stories and origami, Joyce being the story component and Alexander being the origami one. Each participant will leave with at least two stories to retell and 5 or 6 pieces of origami. Storybuddies is a mentoring program designed for High School students who are also parents. With the use of personal storytelling, mentors and students become friends and gain insights into the joys and challenges of parenting. Potluck Productions Joyce is an actress. She is one of the co-founders of Potluck Productions, a theatre company dedicated to promoting and producing the works of women playwrights. She has also served on the boards of four different theatre companies New Directions Theatre Company, Just Off Broadway Theatre Association, Olathe Community Theatre Association and Potluck Productions. She teaches creative drama classes for the Coterie Theatre Company in their summer program and Art Exploration camps for the Kids College at Maple Woods Community College. Joyce is an exhibiting visual artist. She currently works in pastels. Prior to her storytelling career, Joyce worked in the corporate world as an administrator for Corporate Pension and Profit sharing plans with UMB bank. She held administrative positions with Social Security Administration, which included middle management positions in Debt Management and Data Operations
